Provides general nursing care to maternal and neonatal patients during the antenatal, labor and delivery, postpartum by performing the following duties.
These functions are considered essential functions for one or more of the following reasons:
  1. The performance of this function is the reason that the job exists.
  2. There are limited employees among whom the performance of this function can be distributed.
  3. This function occupies a great deal of the employee’s time.
  4. This function is highly specialized. Employees are hired for the skill/ability to perform this function.
  5. Failure to perform this function may have serious consequences.

  1. Directly provides patient care and monitors the patient's response to labor, delivery and postpartum phases of pregnancy, assisting and educating in breastfeeding as needed.
  2. Promotes wellness for mother during pregnancy and after delivery through continuous education.
  3. Provides education to mother about infant care.
  4. Assembles and prepares all supplies and equipment for delivery.
  5. Cares for infant immediately after birth and throughout the hospital stay. Monitors infant’s transition to extrauterine life closely, providing advanced care as needed. Prepares and maintains infants' medical records.
  6. Provides a safe and secure environment for newborn infants.
  7. Cares for admitted neonate to age of 30 days.
  8. Documents all events and education in the patient medical record utilizing computers.
  9. Communicates patient's condition verbally and in writing to the physician and the nursing supervisor.
  10. Assists other FBC staff in maintaining skills and learning new procedures and equipment.
  11. Collaborates with coworkers in care of mother / baby couplet.
  12. Assists physicians with procedures.
  13. Assists nurse manager as requested.
  14. Employs tact and courtesy at all times, with patients, physicians, visitors and co-workers. Continually strives to establish and maintain good rapport and working relationships to foster positive intra- and interdepartmental communications.
  15. Follows hospital and department policies, procedures and guidelines without being reminded. Flexibly applies rules and procedures. .
  16. Follows hospital and department safety rules.
  17. Assists staff with emergencies in other nursing units when possible.


  1. Maintains a clean, orderly and safe environment for all patients in the FBC unit.
  2. Clerical duties as required in the department.
  3. Maintains inventory and requisitions supplies as needed.
  4. Monitors equipment for proper functioning; arranges for repairs as necessary.
  5. Attends at least 50% of FBC staff meetings and reads minutes of all meetings. Attends in-services as requested.
  6. Assists in Performance Improvement projects and data collection.
  7. Actively participates in the HRRMC Organizational and departmental Strategic plans.


This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum of an Associate’s Degree (ADN) from an accredited nursing program. Minimum of one year in area of specialty or acute care preferred or adequate orientation.


Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, , professional journals, technical procedures, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, visitors, physicians and employees of the Medical Center.


Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.

  2. Emergency or crisis situations
  3. Be subjected to irregular hours on occasion
  4. Handling absentee replacement or high census demands on short notice


Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Maintain current, active license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Colorado.
Maintain current BLS certification. If not already certified, must complete certification within 30 days of hire.
Maintain current ACLS certification. If not already certified, must complete certification within 60 days of hire.
Maintain current Neonatal Resuscitation certification. If not already certified, must complete certification at the next available training date.

Maintain current PEARS certification. If not already certified, must complete certification within 60 days of hire.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk or sit; and must be able to smell in order to detect changes in odors. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision for reading medical records, monitors and other equipment; color vision to observe patient for changes, color of fluids; peripheral vision to observe surroundings while providing patient care; and ability to adjust focus while looking from patient to other areas.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and cleaning agents, outside weather conditions when discharging patients, and risk of electrical shock from equipment in the FBC. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; it is directly affected by the volume of patients. Components of environmental noise include patient call bells, monitors, pumps.
